The Woman's Exchange Gift Shop
The Woman's Exchange carries a large selection of handcrafted toys for children as well as hand knit sweaters, christening gowns, blankets and hand smocked dresses. In addition to the large selection of handmade items, you can find a delicious selection of foods including casseroles, cookies, cakes, fudge, Opera Fudge, cheese crackers and much, much more!
This fascinating gift shop, operated by a group of faithful volunteers, is an non-profit organization created for the sole purpose of "Helping Others To Help Themselves", as well as contributing and supporting local organizations like the Neighborhood Visiting Nurses Association.
The Woman's Exchange was started in 1931 by a group of public-spirited members of the Neighborhood League who decided that women in the community should be given an opportunity to increase their incomes by working at home making cooked items and "sewing a fine seam". A small shop was rented on Bloomingdale Avenue in Wayne. Two part-time paid workers and many volunteers sold home cooked products and handicraft items from 50 consignors. The original shop was quickly outgrown and in 1932, the Exchange moved to its present loction at 185 East Lancaster Avenue, Wayne, PA.
If you can afford to donate four hours a week to helping others, please consider volunteering and joining a fabulous group of caring women working in a warm and friendly atomosphere. Call Miffy Greene, our Volunteer Coordinator, at (610) 688-1431.
